Home Toothache Remedies to Try and When to See the Emergency Dentist Instead

by Lonnie Bryant

Most people have dealt with a toothache at one point or another. No doubt about it, tooth pain can be some of the most severe and frustrating pain to deal with. The tablets that you might take for a headache don't necessarily work when it's your tooth causing the pain, so you might want to explore some other remedies. Here are a few solutions to try and information about when it's time to stop the home remedies in favour of the emergency dentist.

Saltwater Rinse

Saltwater can help with healing, and it can also reduce swelling and pain. In fact, dentists often recommend saltwater rinses for patients who are recovering from tooth extractions. Make a simple saltwater rinse with a teaspoon of salt and one cup of boiling water. Wait until the water has sufficiently cooled to be comfortable, and then swish it around in your mouth for 30-60 seconds. Spit the saltwater out and repeat as needed for pain relief.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide can be an effective remedy for infection, which is often the cause of tooth pain. Simply swish a small amount of 3% hydrogen peroxide your mouth for around 30 seconds, and then spit out immediately. Rinse your mouth out with water 2-3 times afterwards to ensure that you don't swallow the peroxide.

Cloves

Cloves have traditionally been used to numb nerves, and they can be quite effective for tooth nerve pain. However, since cloves have such a powerful numbing agent they must be used cautiously. You can put a whole clove on the painful tooth, and then bite down lightly to release the analgesic. Don't over-chew or swallow the clove. You'll begin to feel the numbing quite quickly. You can leave the clove in place for as long as you need pain relief, but when it grow soggy spit it out and replace it if needed.

When Is It Time to See the Emergency Dentist?

All of the remedies described above are temporary measures to relieve tooth pain. It's best to see the dentist as soon as possible so the problem can be resolved for the long term. In some situations, you just can't wait to see the dentist, however. If you have serious tooth pain even after trying these remedies, see the emergency dentist straight away. This also applies if your tooth is knocked out, broken, or if you're experiencing bleeding from the mouth.

Tooth pain can soon be a thing of the past thanks to a combination of home remedies and help from your dentist. Contact an emergency dentist at businesses like Dentists @ Muswellbrook Pty Ltd to get the help you need.

About Me

Braces versus Retainers: A Comprehensive Overveiw

There are more than two ways to straighten a smile, and in this blog, I plan to discuss them all. I plan to look at the differences between braces and retainers and explain why sometimes you may need them both. I look at the differences in cost, time commitment and efficacy. Personally, I have had a bit of experience with this subject – I had braces as a young teen, and I had a permanent retainer. In this blog, I discuss what I have learned, and I present all kinds of new information on the topic. Whether you are trying to make decisions for yourself or your child. I hope you find this information useful.
